Mid-side, or M/S, processing splits a stereo signal into two parts you can work on separately: the Mid, which is the content common to both the left and right channels, meaning the centre of the image, and the Side, which is the difference between left and right, meaning the stereo width. Once a signal is split this way you can raise, cut, EQ or compress the middle and the sides on their own, then fold them back into ordinary stereo.
It is not panning, and it is not a stereo widener as such. It is a way of looking at a stereo signal as centre content plus difference content, so you can treat each with its own settings. The frequencies and amounts here are rough starting points, and because side moves can behave oddly in mono, the mono check at the end matters as much as the move itself.
Mid-side processing splits a stereo signal into a Mid channel and a Side channel so you can process them separately. The Mid is everything the left and right channels have in common, which is the sound sitting in the centre of the image, such as a lead vocal, the kick, the bass and the snare. The Side is everything that differs between left and right, which is the material spread out toward the edges, such as reverb tails, stereo pads and wide guitars. Split the signal that way and you can, for instance, brighten only the centre, or lift only the sides, without touching the other.
This is not the same as panning. Panning takes one sound and sets how much of it goes to the left speaker versus the right, placing that single part somewhere across the field, which is the subject of our guide on stereo width. Mid-side does not move individual sounds. It works on the whole stereo signal at once, dividing it into what is shared and what is different. Panning decides where a part sits; mid-side decides how you treat the centre and the edges as two separate groups.
A quick way to hold it in your head: the Mid channel is what both sides share, and the Side channel is what they do not. It is the sum and the difference of the two speakers, not the left and the right themselves. That is why the Side channel on its own tends to sound thin and hollow, and why turning the Side down pulls the whole image in toward the centre.
The Mid channel is the sum of the left and right channels, and the Side channel is their difference. A plugin builds the Mid by adding left and right together, so anything identical in both sides adds up and stays; it builds the Side by subtracting one from the other, so anything identical cancels to nothing and only the differences remain. That is why a centred vocal lands almost entirely in the Mid, and a wide stereo effect lands almost entirely in the Side.
To get back to normal stereo, the plugin reverses the maths: it adds the Side back to the Mid to rebuild the left channel, and subtracts the Side from the Mid to rebuild the right. Encode, process, decode, all inside the one plugin, so what you patch in and out is still ordinary left and right stereo. The exact scaling, such as whether the sum is halved to hold the loudness steady, differs between tools, but the idea is that simple: sum and difference on the way in, add and subtract on the way out.
Knowing what lands where is most of the skill. Centred, shared content, the lead vocal, the kick, the bass and the snare, collects in the Mid. Spread-out content, reverb, delays, doubled or widened parts and room sound, collects in the Side. So a Mid move reaches the anchors of the mix, and a Side move reaches the space around them. Choosing which of the two channels to touch is usually the first decision you make.
The common jobs are widening or narrowing the image, keeping the low end mono, adding air to the centre without widening it, and EQ-ing or compressing the middle and the sides with their own settings. All of them come from the same simple ability to raise, cut or shape the Mid and the Side on their own.

The most common move is width. Lifting the Side channel raises the difference content and the mix spreads wider; lowering it pulls the image in toward the centre. This is a broad way to adjust stereo width on a finished stereo signal, which is different from widening by panning parts apart earlier at the mixing stage. Both have their place, and neither replaces the other.
Two more moves earn their keep often. Rolling the Side channel off below somewhere around 100 to 150 Hz keeps the bass and the low end mono and centred, so the bottom stays solid and even while the width up above is left alone. And a gentle high shelf on the Mid on its own adds air or presence to a centred vocal without widening it, which helps when a boost across the whole stereo signal would smear the sides. Because the Mid and the Side each take their own EQ or compression, you can also tame a busy, harsh centre or steady overexcited sides one at a time.
Mid-side has nothing to act on in mono. If the left and right channels are identical there is no difference between them, so the Side channel is empty and there is nothing to widen or trim. M/S earns its place on genuinely stereo material: a stereo bus, a stereo instrument, a full mix, or a real stereo effect return.
Check the result in mono, because the Side channel is the part most likely to disappear when a mix is summed to one speaker. The Side is the difference between left and right, and folding a mix to mono adds left and right back together, so heavily boosted side content can partly or completely cancel and vanish. Whatever you lifted in the sides is exactly what is at risk.
This is a phase problem, the same one behind width tricks in general, and it is worth understanding rather than fearing. The short version is that the Side channel holds out-of-step information by design, so the harder you push it, the more the mono fold-down loses. Mono still matters because a lot of listening happens on a single phone speaker, a smart speaker, a club system or a laptop, and some broadcast and streaming paths sum to mono along the way.
So the habit is simple. After any noticeable side move, flip the whole mix to mono and listen for parts that thin out, drop in level or fall away. If something important collapses, ease the side boost back until it holds together, or keep the low end mono as above so the most fragile content is safe from the start. Used gently and checked in mono, M/S is a precise, quiet tool. Pushed hard without checking, it is one of the quickest ways to a mix that sounds huge on one system and empty on another.
Half of good mid-side work is having good stereo material to begin with. A source whose centre and sides are already balanced wants shaping, not rescuing, and the moves above stay small and musical rather than turning into heavy repairs.
