Song structure is the plan of a track: which sections play, in what order, how long each one lasts, and how the energy climbs and drops between them. It is also called the arrangement. Most songs are built from a small set of sections that repeat, so the craft is in the order you put them in and the way you move from one to the next.
Works in any DAW and any genre, with any sounds, hardware or software. Nothing here needs a particular plugin or a particular style.
Song structure is the order and length of a track's sections and the way its energy rises and falls across them. It is the arrangement: the map of what plays when. A verse, a chorus, a drop and a breakdown are sections, and structure is the decision about which ones you use, how long they run, and what order they come in.
Almost all popular music is built this way, from a handful of repeating parts rather than one long stream of new ideas. Repetition is what lets a listener settle in and start to expect what comes next, and the small breaks from that pattern are what keep it interesting. Get the order and the lengths right and a track feels like it goes somewhere, even when the individual parts are simple.
There is no single correct structure, and none of the shapes below are rules. They are common starting points that listeners already know in their bones, which is exactly why they work, and also why bending them on purpose can land so well.
The common pop sections are the intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge and outro. Electronic and dance tracks tend to use their own set: an intro, a build, a drop and a breakdown. Most songs pick a few of these and repeat them, and the names matter less than what each part is doing to the energy.
The pop set, roughly in the order you tend to meet them:

Electronic and dance music leans on a different set, built around one big release rather than a sung hook:

Different genres favour different shapes. A pop song might run intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus. A house or techno track built for a club and a DJ leans on long plain intros and outros and a repeating groove instead, which is covered in how to make house music. Plenty of tracks blur the two, borrowing a drop into a pop song or a sung hook into a dance track.
Sections are usually built from phrases of 4, 8 or 16 bars, and most sections are one or more of those phrases long. A verse or a chorus is often 8 or 16 bars, an intro or a build might be 8 or 16, and a short pre-chorus might be just 4.
A phrase is a group of bars that feels like one complete musical thought, and the ear naturally counts in these grouped lengths. Because of that, a listener expects something to change on those boundaries, at the top of a new 8 or 16. Bring a part in, drop one out, or move to a new section on those lines and the track feels intentional. Change things in the middle of a phrase and it tends to feel accidental instead of planned.
An easy way to feel the lengths is to count bars in fours as the track plays: one, two, three, four, then two, two, three, four, and on up. Most changes land as you reach a fresh group of 8 or 16. If a section change feels early or late, count through it and you will usually find it landed off the phrase.
These are conventions, not laws. Odd lengths, a 6 bar phrase or a 12 bar section, get used on purpose to unsettle or surprise, and they read as a deliberate choice precisely because they break the count the ear was expecting. Start from the common lengths, then bend them when you have a reason to.
You draw an energy map: decide where the track should feel biggest and smallest, then add and strip parts across the sections so the energy rises and falls toward those points. The chorus or the drop lands hardest when the section before it holds back, so tension and release is the whole game.
Energy is mostly a matter of how much is playing and how loud and bright it is. Take parts away in a verse or a breakdown and the track feels smaller and calmer; pile them back in for the chorus or the drop and it feels bigger. A common move is to strip right down just before the biggest moment, so the contrast makes that moment hit harder than the parts alone ever could.
Between sections, small transitions smooth the joins or sharpen them. A drum fill, a cymbal swell, a riser that sweeps up in pitch, a beat that cuts out for a bar, or a single held note can all mark the seam and pull the listener across it. How steep the rises are and how often they come depends on the genre. Dance music built for a floor tends to move on a regular, predictable grid so the changes can be felt coming, as in how to make house music, while a ballad might have one slow climb across the whole song. Sketch where the peaks and the troughs should sit first, then arrange the parts to hit them.
Play the track from top to bottom and watch the energy, not the parts. If it climbs and dips where you meant it to, and the biggest moment actually feels like the biggest moment, the arrangement is working. If everything sits at one level the whole way through, the fix is contrast: take more away in the quiet sections so the loud ones have somewhere to land.
Everything above is about the shape of a track, and it works with any sounds at all. It is easier to hear that shape, though, when the parts you are moving around already sound finished, so you are judging the arrangement rather than wrestling a thin or weak sound into place first.
