How to make a vocal chop

A vocal chop takes a vocal recording, cuts it into small fragments, and re-pitches and re-arranges those fragments into something new: a melodic hook you play like notes, or a rhythmic, percussive texture. You pick a short vowel-heavy phrase, slice it on the transients, map the slices across a sampler, tune them to your key, and play them back. Here is how each step works.

Works in any DAW, with any sampler that lets you slice and map a sample. Nothing here needs a particular plugin. One thing to settle first: the vocal has to be yours to use, which the last section covers plainly.

What is a vocal chop?

A vocal chop is a vocal recording cut into small fragments and then re-pitched and re-arranged into something new. You take a short vocal, slice it into pieces, spread those pieces across a sampler or a keyboard, tune them to the key of your track, and play them back as a melody or a rhythm. The same technique gives you two different results: a tuned lead hook that sits on top like a sung line, or a short, stuttering percussive texture.

The steps are consistent whatever the source. Get a clean, vowel-heavy recording first, because everything after that is slicing, mapping and tuning:

None of this is hard once the recording is right. The craft is mostly in choosing a phrase that survives being cut up and re-pitched, and then in playing the pieces musically rather than scattering them.

How do you chop and re-pitch a vocal?

Slice the recording on its transients so each fragment is a clean syllable or sound, map the slices across a sampler or a keyboard so each key plays one, then tune them to the key of your track and play them back as a melody. That is the whole move; the rest is choosing a phrase that takes to it.

Pick a short, vowel-heavy phrase

A held vowel or an open word re-pitches cleanly and holds a note, which is what you want. Hard consonants and fast words tend to get chewed up when you stretch or shift them. A single word, a short phrase, or one sustained note is plenty; you do not need much material to build a hook out of.

Slice on the transients

Cut where each new sound starts, the transients, so every slice is a clean fragment rather than half of one syllable spilling into the next. Most samplers and DAWs can detect transients for you and drop a marker at each one, which you can then nudge by hand. Clean slices are what let you play the vocal note by note without clicks or half-sounds.

Map the slices across a keyboard

Load the slices into a sampler and spread them across the keys, so each key plays one slice, or so one slice plays back at a different pitch on every key. Now the vocal is an instrument: you can play the fragments one at a time, in any order, at any pitch. This mapping step is what turns a static recording into something you perform.

Tune it to your key

Pitch the slices so they land in the key of your track. Because every note is now in key, the chops sit in tune with your chords instead of clashing with them. It helps to correct the pitch of the raw recording first, so it is properly in tune before you map it; starting from an in-tune source keeps everything cleaner as you move it around. How do you turn chops into a hook?

Play the mapped slices as a melody that follows your chord progression, then add reverb, delay and a formant shift so they sound like a part rather than a pasted sample. Used this way the chops become the lead hook of a lot of future bass and house, or a tight rhythmic texture underneath the track.

Play a melody in key

With the slices tuned and mapped, play a line that follows your chords, the same way you would play any lead. Keep it simple and repeating: a vocal hook is usually a short phrase that comes back, not a long run. The fact that it is a voice, even a chopped and re-pitched one, is what makes people sing it back.

Add space and character

Reverb and a little delay put the chops in the same room as the rest of the track so they stop sounding stuck on top. A formant shift moves the voice up or down without changing the pitch, which makes it sound less like the person who sang it and more like an instrument. Push that further and the source becomes hard to place at all, which is often the point.

Lead hook or rhythmic texture

Two common jobs. As a lead hook, the chops carry a tuned melody on top of the drop, which is the sound of a lot of future bass; the future bass guide covers where that sits. The test

Loop the chopped hook on its own with just the chords under it. If it already sounds like a part someone sang, in tune and in time, it will sit in the track. If it sounds like a sample dropped on top, the fix is in the tuning and the timing, not in more reverb and delay.

How do you stay on the right side of copyright?

Use a vocal you are allowed to use. A vocal recording is someone else's work unless you made it, so record your own, use a cleared or royalty-free vocal, or use an acapella you are licensed to use. The chopping technique is exactly the same whatever the source, so this is only ever about which file you start from.

In practice that gives you three clear routes:

Pulling a vocal off a record and chopping it does not make it yours, and releasing it can cause real trouble even when the result is unrecognisable. If you are not sure a vocal is cleared, treat it as not cleared. None of this changes how you chop; it only changes which file you start from, so start from one you are free to use.

Turning a chopped vocal into evolving texture

Most of a vocal chop is slicing and tuning, which any sampler will do, and it is worth learning to do by hand. The part that is slow to fake is turning a chopped vocal into a moving, evolving bed that keeps changing rather than looping the same second or two over and over.
